ILLUSTRATES THE EVOLUTION OF WORK CONDUCTED IN THE UNITED STATES ON THE SOCIAL ECOLOGY OF CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS AND COMPARES THE RESULTS OF SEVERAL STUDIES BASED ON THE APPLICATION OF A MEASUREMENT SCALE.
Abstract
THE CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION ENVIRONMENT SCALE IS APPLIED TO DETECT THE SOCIAL CLIMATE OF THE PRISON COMMUNITY, TO MONITOR ITS EVOLUTION, TO PLAN INNOVATIONS, AND TO TEST THEIR EFFECTS. DATA ALSO ARE PROVIDED ON TWO CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS IN ITALY WHERE THE SAME MEASUREMENT SCALE WAS USED. THE RESULTS CONFIRM THE HYPOTHESIS THAT A CONTINUOUS MONITORING OF THE PERCEPTION OF THE SOCIAL CLIMATE WITHIN A CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION CAN HELP IN FORMULATING BETTER TREATMENT METHODS AND BY DETECTING SYMPTOMS OF DISCONTENT AND UNREST, IN PREVENTING RIOTS AND VIOLENCE. THE TEXT IS DOCUMENTED THROUGHOUT WITH GRAPHIC TABLES. --IN ITALIAN...KAP
