Organized crime is discussed as an aspect of the internationalization of crime with emphasis on its expansion from traditional forms such as arms and drug trafficking into common criminality and on the inadequacy of much of the response from the criminal justice system.
Abstract
Functional interdependence is growing between a variety of criminal sectors with economic gain the main goal and the use of business models the main approach. In Italy, the United States, and other countries, current conceptual frameworks and theories fail to explain the nature of this criminality or to offer effective guidance for criminal justice responses. As a result, a new approach is needed that is based on recognition of the importance of better organization, practical objectives, and evaluations of the costs and benefits of possible alternatives chosen to achieve these objectives. Thus efficiency and effectiveness as well as justice must be the criteria for allocating resources. 24 reference notes
