Shooting surveillance videos requires training, careful planning, good equipment, and practice.
Abstract
In choosing a camera, the police should look for one that offers optical reach with either interchangeable lenses or telephoto adapters. Necessary additional equipment includes an adequate power supply with plenty of batteries, tape labels, a video monitor, a tripod, audio cables and microphones, and headphones. Surveillance almost always requires using the telephoto end of a zoom lens. Since hand holding a camera steady for several hours is out of the question, a tripod is essential. Once all equipment has been assembled, practice sessions can be conducted. Such sessions may involve using a van or a car with tinted windows and going to a grocery store parking lot where people can be followed as they walk in and out of the store.
