Abstract
Congressional testimony from the SMART Office on February 15, 2011, reviews the status of the implementation of the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA). It reports that the SMART office has reviewed materials and requests for technical assistance on SORNA implementation from 47 States, the District of Columbia, 5 Territories, and 41 Native American tribes. Under "News," SMART reports that on January 11, 2011, the U.S. Department of Justice released supplemental guidelines for SORNA. The latest version of the substantial implementation checklist reflects changes authorized by the supplemental guidelines. As the final implementation deadline for SORNA implementation approaches, the SMART Office has been working on new ways to assist registration jurisdictions as they work toward implementation. Other SMART news pertains to the submission of substantial implementation packets, the consequences of failure to implement SORNA, and tracking sex offenders departing and entering the Country. This issue's section on resources discusses funding and training opportunities available from SMART. A feature entitled "Spotlight on Indian Country" reports on tools, resources, and guidance available to assist tribal jurisdictions in implementing SORNA.
