This article describes federally funded drug and crime research conducted by the National Development and Research Institutes (NDRI) during the 1974-1994 period.

Abstract

The drug-crime nexus has been an ongoing focus of the NDRI, along with drug user treatment evaluation and AIDS research. During the 1974-1994 period, the NDRI has received about 20 major drugs and crime grants. Key research findings are presented from studies related to violent and nonviolent crime; prison-based drug treatment; drug use detection; and the use and distribution of heroin, crack, and methadone. Progress in research continues to be made in important areas of AIDS prevention; the treatment of adult, female, adolescent, mentally ill, and homeless drug users; the ethnography of street addicts and cocaine users; and the epidemiology of drug use as it relates to HIV/AIDS, deafness, and other health-related domains. 185 references
