This chapter explores several situational crime prevention techniques that could be used to combat corruption in the timber harvesting and selling processes.
Abstract
Organized theft in the timber industry is a large and significant worldwide enterprise and involves substantial criminal cooperation and corruption in every step of the timber harvesting and selling process. The authors of this chapter explore several ways that situational crime prevention techniques can be used to fight this type of organized crime. The chapter begins with a detailed examination of the timber industry throughout the world and how the illegal timber trade is connected to organized crime. It discusses the fundamentals of the illegal timber trade and examines the various types of corruption used in this industry. This is followed by a discussion of seven categories of situational crime prevention measures adapted specifically for the timber industry to combat corruption and illegal trade in this industry. The authors conclude that corruption and organized crime are amenable to situational crime prevention measures that are carefully used in the proper situations. References
