Abstract
THE MEANING OF CRISIS INTERVENTION AND THE SUITABILITY OF USING POLICE IN CRISIS INTERVENTION ARE DISCUSSED. THE TRAINING PROGRAM IN SIMI VALLEY INVOLVES APPROXIMATELY 120 HOURS OF INITIAL TRAINING IN CRISIS INTERVENTION FOLLOWED BY A 16 HOUR REFRESHER COURSE IN THE SECOND YEAR. THE COURSE CONSISTS OF TRAINING IN SUCH AREAS AS PSYCHOLOGY, BEHAVIORAL CONTRACTS, PERSONAL STRESS, SUICIDE PREVENTION, ETHICS, AND COMMUNICATIONS SKILLS. SPECIFIC TRAINING TECHNIQUES ARE DESCRIBED. TACTICS FOUND TO BE MOST EFFECTIVE IN CRISIS INTERVENTION WERE BEHAVIORAL CONTRACTS AND COMMUNICATION EXERCISES BETWEEN DISPUTANTS. IT WAS NOTED THAT THE NEW INTERVENTION TECHNIQUES WILL DEMAND A GREATER INVESTMENT OF POLICE TIME. ALSO NOTED WAS A REPORTED INCREASE IN POLICE JOB SATISFACTION.
