This article describes the security system for Universal Studios Florida (USF), an enterprise that requires security for both the public coming for entertainment and the film companies using USF facilities for filming.
Abstract
USF bills itself as the largest working studio outside of Hollywood. USF also charges the public to attend the facilities and learn how movies are made, see what goes on in soundstages, and enjoy movie-related rides and shows. The security system is administered by 60 regular unarmed guards and 35 part-time reserve guards. The guards receive 40 hours of training at the Mid-Florida Technical Institute, with the curriculum tailored to the needs of USF. The training covers security basics and first aid. The USF security manager is currently working with the Institute to develop an ongoing training curriculum for security officers, supervisors, and managers. The curriculum will include disaster management, investigative interviewing, and other managerial subjects. Security officer responsibilities include patrolling the parking lot, directing visitors, enforcing site restrictions and safety procedures, and protecting USF assets from vandalism and theft. All security surveillance and communication at USF originates, terminates, or passes through the security command center. The center serves a dual role of security and life safety.
