Abstract
The selection of incidents used in this study was based upon the following criteria: lethality, substantial property damage, use of unusual tactics or weapons, and perceptibility of targets as United States or representatives of U.S. interests. There were 89 anti-U.S. incidents in 1993. Forty-three occurred in Inter- America; 13 of these were in Chile, and 12 were in Columbia. Most of the incidents in Inter-America were bombings, followed by sniping and strafing. A total of 17 incidents occurred in Europe. These incidents were fairly evenly spread among Croatia, Estonia, Germany, Georgia, Italy, Norway, Russia, Serbia-Montenegro, Tajikistan, Turkey, and the United Kingdom. Twelve incidents occurred in the Near East. Twelve incidents occurred in East Asia and the Pacific; five were in the Philippines, five were in South Korea, and two were in Japan. One incident occurred in the United States, three occurred in South Asia, and five incidents occurred in the Near East. Americans in captivity are also named, and the circumstances of their captivity are indicated.
