REPORTING ON HIS SURVEY OF ALL PAROLE AGENCIES IN THE U.S., THE AUTHOR REVEALS THAT PAROLE OFFICERS IN MOST AGENCIES PERSONALLY ARREST PAROLE VIOLATORS, BUT DO NOT USUALLY CARRY FIREARMS.
Abstract
AFTER REVIEWING THE LITERATURE ON THIS SUBJECT, THE AUTHOREXPLAINS THE ROLE OF THE PAROLE OFFICER AS SOCIAL CASEWORKER AND HOW, BASED ON HIS PERSONAL EXPERIENCE AS A NEW YORK PAROLE OFFICER, THIS ROLE IS AIDED BY BEING ARMED AND ABLE TO ARREST PAROLE VIOLATORS. HE LISTS SEVEN ITEMS WHICH HE FEELS PAROLE AGENCIES SHOULD REVIEW TO RE-EVALUATE THEIR APPROACH TO LAW ENFORCEMENT, COMMUNITY PROTECTION AND SOUND CASEWORK. THE REPORT INCLUDES EACH PAROLE AGENCY'S RESPONSES TO THE FOLLOWING SURVEY QUESTIONS: ARE OFFICERS AUTHORIZED TO CARRY FIREARMS? WHAT IS AGENCY ATTITUDE TOWARD CARRYING FIREARMS? DO OFFICERS RECEIVE FIREARMS TRAINING? DO OFFICERS PERSONALLY ARREST PAROLE VIOLATORS?
