IN CONNECTION WITH A NOTORIOUS WEST GERMAN KIDNAPPING CASE, IT WAS PROPOSED THAT SPECIAL PRIVILEGES BE GRANTED TO ANYONE GIVING TESTIMONY CLEARING UP THE CASE OR LEADING TO THE ARREST OF THE RINGLEADERS.
Abstract
THE PERSON KIDNAPPED WAS PETER LORENZ, CHAIRMAN OF THE BERLIN CHRISTIAN DEMOCRATIC UNION. DIETHER POSSER, THE MINISTER OF JUSTICE OF NORTH RHINE WESTPHALIA, PROPOSED GRANTING EITHER IMMUNITY FROM PROSECUTION, A LARGE AMOUNT OF MONEY, PERMISSION FOR THE KEY WITNESS TO CHANGE HIS NAME, OR THE OPPORTUNITY TO EMIGRATE, UNMOLESTED, TO A COUNTRY OF THE WITNESS' CHOICE. POSSER'S PROPOSAL LED TO CONSIDERABLE DISCUSSION, AND A GOOD DEAL OF OPPOSITION WAS VOICED TO THE IDEA OF GIVING MONEY TO A WITNESS TURNING STATE'S EVIDENCE. THE AUTHOR EXPRESSES DOUBT THAT THE PROPOSAL WILL BE ACCEPTED WITHOUT FURTHER DISCUSSION. --IN GERMAN
