This publication contains summaries of 29 successful programs for preventing the use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs (ATOD) in the southeastern United States.
Abstract
The programs were selected for excellence overall or in particular areas. All of them: 1) include a clear no-use message regarding ATOD and youth; 2) have been operating for at least 1 year; 3) draw upon relevant, current ATOD research; 4) develop a scope and sequence appropriate for participants; 5) establish and substantially achieve specific, measurable objectives; 6) employ qualified personnel; 7) are replicable; and 8) where applicable, facilitate basic academic skills, and address the needs of high-risk and minority youths. Summaries include the programs' various approaches; target population; features; number of youths served; budget; and contact names, addresses, and phone numbers.
