IN RECENT YEARS THERE HAS BEEN AN INCREASE IN CRIMES PLANNED ABROAD AND CARRIED OUT IN SWEDEN BY ORGANIZED GANGS, WITH DRUG RELATED CRIME, ARMED ROBBERY AND DEALING IN STOLEN GOODS BEING THE MOST FREQUENT OFFENSES.
Abstract
ORGANIZED SMUGGLING OF DRUGS INTO SWEDEN, INCLUDING DROPS MADE FROM AIRCRAFT, HAS INCREASED MARKEDLY. STATISTICS ARE GIVEN SHOWING THE RECENT INCREASE IN ARMED ROBBERY AND DEALING IN STOLEN GOODS. IN 1969, A LAW WAS PASSED AUTHORIZING THE USE OF ELECTRONIC SURVEILLANCE OF TELEPHONE CONVERSATIONS WHERE SERIOUS DRUG RELATED CRIME WAS SUSPECTED. SWEDISH CORRECTIONS POLICY NOW AIMS VERY EMPHATICALLY AT REHABILITATION AND RESOCIALIZATION, PRIMARILY THROUGH TREATMENT AFTER RELEASE. IN EARLY 1973, A PARLIAMENTARY COMMITTEE WAS SET UP TO ESTABLISH GUIDELINES AND MAKE PROPOSALS FOR PRACTICAL STEPS TO BE TAKEN TO REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF CRIME AND IMPROVE PUBLIC ORDER. THE AUTHOR ADVOCATES GREATER CONFORMITY IN BOTH THE CRIMINAL AND CORRECTIONS LAWS OF THE VARIOUS COUNTRIES IN ORDER TO FACILITATE INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION IN COMBATTING INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZED CRIME. --IN GERMAN
