Papers from a 1985 Chicago symposium on the sexual exploitation of children focus on the nature and extent of such exploitation, pedophiles and pedophilia, prosecution issues, and services for the child victim.
Abstract
Papers which address the nature and extent of child sexual exploitation include case descriptions of such exploitation, the nature of child pornography and pornographers, international aspects of child pornography, and issues in determining the incidence of child sexual exploitation. Papers on pedophiles and pedophilia distinguish between the 'situational' and the 'preferential' child molester, the latter being the pedophile who prefers sexual contact with children rather than with adults. Some aspects of the diagnosis and treatment of pedophiles are also discussed. In discussing the prosecution of child sexual abuse cases, a paper presents principles and analyzes practices for the investigation, charging, preparation, and prosecution of such cases. Other papers on prosecution address the case processing procedures used by the special child sexual abuse unit of the Cook County State's Attorney's Office (Illinois) and aspects of the justice system which limit its capacity to respond appropriately to child sexual abuse offenders and victims. Papers on child victim services consider services for 'street' children, institutional treatment, the individual treatment of the exploited child, and an Illinois multifaceted child safety program.
