A survey was conducted among 1,000 men and 1,000 women in five urban and five rural sites in Zaire to obtain information about sexual behavior and particularly practices that affect the risk of HIV transmission.
Abstract
Approximately half of the men and one-third of the women surveyed who had heard of AIDS claimed to have changed their sexual behavior due to AIDS. The primary changes among men were avoiding prostitutes, remaining faithful to one partner, and reducing the number of partners. Condoms were mentioned by less than 5 percent of these men. Remaining faithful to one partner was the most frequently cited change for women. Use of condoms was mentioned by relatively few. Eighteen percent of men reported having more than one sexual partner in the past 30 days; 10 percent of married men and 12 percent of unmarried men had visited a prostitute in the past 30 days. Condom use was higher among men who had had multiple partners and/or visited a prostitute. Focus groups proved useful in reaching the conclusion that the survey data significantly underestimate the occurrence of extramarital relations among married women and possibly among married men and in confirming the survey findings on other variables. 2 tables and 19 references
