This Fact Sheet from the U.S. Justice Department’s Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) summarizes the features, objectives, achievements, and data on awards and funding for BJA’s Sexual Assault Forensic Evidence-Inventory, Tracking (SAFE-ITR) Program.

Abstract

This program assists agencies in addressing the inventory, tracking, and reporting of sexual assault kits (SAKs). The program objectives are 1) to gain an understanding of how many SAKs remain in possession of law enforcement agencies and 2) to understand the movement of SAKs through the criminal justice system. As a result of this program, at least six electronic SAK tracking systems have been established, with more in the process of development. There are an estimated 30,000 samples of sexual assault evidence for which DNA or other appropriate forensic analyses were completed. The number of awards and funding amounts are reported for each of the fiscal years 2016 through 2021.
