This article present's the influence of attitudes toward women, sexual stereotyping, and pornography in contributing to rapists failing to see themselves as committing a rape.
Abstract
The following themes were found to contribute to convicted rapists failing to see themselves as rapists: (1) the ambivalent games women are taught to play and men are led to believe that 'no means yes;' (2) the belief that 'cooperation means consent' even though cooperation might be prompted by a weapon; (3) the men often have a stereotype of a rapist as being psychotic, aggressive, brutal, and sadistic and do not see themselves in that role; (4) the rapist may also tend to view himself as sexually irresistible; (5) the American dating system may contribute to rapists viewing rape as sexual payment; (6) various myths and attitudes about rape may be believed by rapists.
