Seven articles provide an overview of the sex offender problem and discuss the evaluation and treatment of male sex offenders, followed by suggestions for future research on sex offender evaluation and treatment.
Abstract
Two articles that address the sex offender problem consider how the criminal justice system has distinguished sex offenders from other offenders, how their differential treatment has developed, legal issues in the treatment of sex offenders, and traditional clinical concepts held by mental health professionals who work with adult sexual molesters of children. An article pertaining to sex offender treatment details the three major organic treatments for sex offenders: antiandrogens or hormonal agents, surgical castration, and stereotaxic neurosurgery. The appropriate use of such treatment approaches and their anatomical and physiologic bases are presented. Another article addresses the assessment and treatment of sexually aggressive men from the perspective of behavioral theory and therapy. Father-daughter incest is explored in an article from a general systems perspective, suggesting areas for future research and theory development. The two remaining articles review the problems of treating pedophiles, analyze the current state of research on the evaluation and treatment of sex offenders, and offer suggestions for future research.
