Plaster models of the teeth of 3-year-old Japanese children, 96 males and 98 females, were used to record crown length, width, and thickness of five maxillary and five mandibular deciduous teeth; the objective was to develop sex determination formulas.
Abstract
Several practical formulas were derived from only crown width and crown thickness values because deciduous teeth wear in children age 4 and over progresses rapidly, making the crown length measurement unreliable. Formulas were calculated for maxillary teeth alone and mandibular teeth alone. Formulas based on crown width and thickness were also calculated for both maxillary and mandibular teeth. Stepwise discriminant analysis was then employed to determine the most reliable measurements, and a practical formula was subsequently devised. Results showed that significant differences in recorded values occurred for 28 of 30 measurements and that the mean value of each measurement was greater in males than in females. Measurement items not exhibiting significant differences were crown width of the maxillary lateral incisor and crown thickness of the mandibular second molar. Accuracy rates for sex determination analysis and stepwise sex determination analysis were 78.6 and 75.7 percent, respectively. Accuracy ranges for modified sex determination formulas and the associated stepwise sex determination analysis were 70.6- 78.4 and 67-76.8 percent, respectively. 42 references, 15 tables, and 13 figures
