THIS STUDY EXAMINES THE OPERATION AND OUTCOME OF THE SEVENTH STEP FOUNDATION PROGRAM AT THE (KY) STATE REFORMATORY - THIS PROGRAM ENTAILS THE RESTRUCTURING OF OFFENDER ATTITUDES THROUGH REMOTIVATION AND COUNSELING.
Abstract
SEVENTH STEP IS FURTHER DESCRIBED AS AN OFFENDER-OPERATED ORGANIZATION THAT ATTEMPTS TO WORK WITH THE HARD-CORE, INCORRIGIBLE CONVICT. THE ORGANIZATION BELIEVES IT CAN PROVIDE THE EMPATHY AND CREDIBIILTY LACKING IN PROFESSIONALLY SPONSORED PROGRAMS SINCE ITS STAFF HAVE HAD SHARED EXPERIENCES AND PROBLEMS UNIQUE TO OFFENDERS. THE EVALUATION WAS BASED ON PERSONAL OBSERVATION, THE 7TH STEP ADMINISTRATIE STAFF'S WEEKLY REPORTS, AND CHAPTER RECORDS. THE EVALUATION FOUND THAT THE 7TH STEP PROJECT APPEARS TO BE HAVING IMPACT WITH REGARD TO INMATE PARTICIPATION AND RECIDIVISM.
