The Essex (Great Britain) police service introduced new Service Delivery Standards (SDS) to its 4,500 officers and civilian personnel in an attempt to improve service delivery.
Abstract
The standards were presented to both the police service and the public through an initiative called People, Policing, and You. The program, and the SDS guidelines contained within it, were designed to demonstrate the highest possible standards of quality and service. SDS are grouped under the Key Service areas of crime, traffic, public order, public contact, and community affairs, Each published SDS considers the issues involved and lets police personnel know exactly what is expected of them in dealing with specific tasks. The first five SDS in each Key Service Area were published in February 1993 and were presented to police officers in order to give them an opportunity to question senior staff on the changes.
