A BRIEF DISICUSSION OF THE POTENTIAL, THOUGHT ALLEGEDLY UNREALIZED, ROLE OF THE SOCIAL SCIENCES IN PENAL AND SENTENCING IN ENGLAND.
Abstract
THE AUTHOR SUGGESTS THAT THE LEGAL PROFESSION ADAPT ITS EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM TO MEET MODERN SENTENCING NEEDS. IF THE SYSTEM OF APPOINTING TO THE HIGHER JUDICIARY IS NOT ALTERED, HE SEES A NEED FOR NEWLY APPOINTED JUDGES TO ATTEND A SPECIAL COURSE IN SENTENCING. HE SUGGESTS FINALLY, THAT THE HIGHER JUDICIARY DEVELOP ITS OWN TYPE OF 'THINK TANK' TO ENABLE IT TO STUDY IN DEPTH THE CHANGING BASIS OF ITS SENTENCING POLICIES.
