A SYSTEM HAS BEEN DEVELOPED TO AUTOMATICALLY DETECT THE PASSAGE OF PERSONNEL OR MATERIAL HAVING A CODED ELECTRONIC CREDENTIAL INTO OR OUT OF CONTROLLED AREAS IN A NUCLEAR FACILITY.
Abstract
MOST SECURITY IDENTIFICATION SCHEMES REQUIRE THAT THE PERSON DESIRING ENTRY TO A SECURE AREA PRESENT SOME TYPE OF IDENTIFICATION TO THE SECURITY GUARD. ONCE PERSONNEL ARE INSIDE THE FACILITY, MOVEMENT INTO AND OUT OF CRITICAL AREAS GENERALLY CAN BE MONITORED ONLY BY ADDITIONAL SECURITY FORCE PERSONNEL. WHEN PLACED AT STRATEGIC LOCATIONS SUCH AS CORRIDORS OR DOORWAYS, THIS SYSTEM PROPOSED AUTOMATIC DETECTION WILL MONITOR, IDENTIFY, AND LOG ELECTRONICALLY THE INDIVIDUAL CREDENTIAL ENTERING OR LEAVING THIS PARTICULAR AREA. THE BASIC SYSTEM CONSISTS OF A MULTITURN COIL OR LOOP (CALLED THE EXCITER) CONFIGURED TO THE CORRIDOR OR DOORWAY TO BE MONITORED. THE EXCITER IS DRIVEN BY AN OSCILLATING CURRENT TO ESTABLISH A MAGNETIC FIELD OF SUFFICIENT MAGNITUDE SO AS TO COUPLE ENOUGH ENERGY INTO A SPECIALLY-DESIGNED ELECTRONIC CREDENTIAL TO ACTIVATE ITS ELECTRONICS. UPON ACTIVATION, THIS CREDENTIAL WILL TRANSMIT A CODED RESPONSE TO EITHER THE EXCITER LOOP OR TO A SECOND CONTIGUOUS LOOP, DESIGNATED AS THE RECEIVER LOOP. THIS RESPONSE IS THEN FILTERED, AMPLIFIED, DEMODULATED AND DIGITALLY DECODED. THE DIGITAL CODE WHICH CORRESPONDS TO THE CREDENTIAL CODE IS THEN TRANSFERRED TO A COMPUTING DEVICE FOR RETENTION AND SUBSEQUENT PRESENTATION TO SECURITY PERSONNEL, IF DESIRED. A BLOCK DIAGRAM OF THE CREDENTIAL SYSTEM AND A FEW ILLUSTRATIONS ARE PROVIDED. (WJR)
