THE NEED FOR, AND ADVANTAGES OF, SELF-DEFENSE TRAINING FOR SECURITY PERSONNEL AND EXECUTIVES ARE EXAMINED, AND AN EFFECTIVE SELF-DEFENSE PROGRAM IS OUTLINED.
Abstract
DESPITE THE FACT THAT THE SECURITY PROFESSIONAL FACES A HIGH RISK OF VIOLENT ATTACK IN THE COURSE OF HIS DUTIES, FEW SECURITY EXECUTIVES OR PERSONNEL ARE TRAINED IN SELF-DEFENSE. MANY FEEL THEIR DEFENSE NEEDS CAN BE MET WITH FIREARMS, HOWEVER THIS FORM OF DEFENSE IS OFTEN IMPRACTICAL IN CASES OF SUDDEN ATTACK. SELF-DEFENSE TRAINING OFFERS A NUMBER OF BENEFITS TO THOSE PROTECTING COMPANY ASSETS AND PERSONNEL WHICH INCLUDE PROVISION OF A BALANCED FORM OF EXERCISE AND PHYSICAL CONDITIONING, A PRACTICAL KNOWLEDGE OF POTENTIALLY LIFE-SAVING TECHNIQUES, INCREASED CONFIDENCE AND A SENSE OF ACCOMPLISHMENT, AND THE APPRECIATION OF CORPORATE SUPERIORS. AN EFFECTIVE PROGRAM REQUIRES STRETCHING, TONING, AND CONDITIONING EXERCISES SUCH AS JUMPING JACKS, LEG STRETCHES, AND SIT-UPS. THESE EXERCISES ARE FOLLOWED BY PRACTICE OF THE SELF-DEFENSE MOVEMENTS. THE OPEN AND FORWARD STANCES PROVIDE A SENSE OF BALANCE AND A FOUNDATION FOR OTHER MOVEMENTS. BLOCKING TECHNIQUES SERVE TO PROTECT THE HIGH, MIDDLE, AND LOW REGIONS OF THE BODY. KICKS, PUNCHES, AND STRIKING TECHNIQUES PROVIDE PROTECTION AGAINST A VARIETY OF ATTACKS. A COMPREHENSIVE PROGRAM SHOULD ALSO INCLUDE TRAINING IN DEALING WITH MULTIPLE ATTACKERS, WEAPON DEFENSE, AND RESTRAINING TECHNIQUES. WHILE MANY KARATE, JU-JITSU, JUDO, AND AIKIDO STUDIOS ARE TO BE FOUND THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY, ONLY A FEW OF THESE WILL BE QUALIFIED TO MEET THE SPECIALIZED TRAINING NEEDS OF SECURITY PERSONNEL. A GOOD PROGRAM EMPHASIZES PRACTICAL SUBJECT CONTENT, EMPLOYS A PROFICIENT AND KNOWLEDGEABLE INSTRUCTOR WITH GOOD COMMUNICATION SKILLS, AND PROVIDES CAREFULLY PLANNED AND WELL-ORGANIZED INSTRUCTION. CORPORATE EXECUTIVES SHOULD ALSO BE ENCOURAGED TO TAKE SELF-DEFENSE TRAINING. A NUMBER OF PHOTOGRAPHS ARE INCLUDED TO ILLUSTRATE SELF-DEFENSE STANCES, BLOCKS, AND TECHNIQUES. (JAP)
