IMMEDIATE ACTION TAKEN AT THE SCENE OF AUTOMOBILE VIOLATIONS WILL REDUCE THE NUMBER AND SEVERITY OF TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS.
Abstract
SELECTIVE ENFORCEMENT PROGRAMS NOT ONLY INFLUENCE DRIVER BEHAVIOR IN THE SPECIFIC LOCATIONS WHERE THEY ARE BEING APPLIED, BUT THEY HAVE A FAVORABLE INFLUENCE ON DRIVER BEHAVIOR THROUGHOUT THE COMMUNITY. IF TRAFFIC SAFETY IS TO BE ACHIEVED WITHIN A COMMUNITY THEN COORDINATED EFFORTS MUST BE CHANNELED INTO THREE AREAS -- EDUCATION, ENGINEERING, AND ENFORCEMENT. WHILE PROGRAMS OF SELECTIVE ENFORCEMENT ARE OBVIOUSLY BASED IN THE ENFORCEMENT AREA OF ACTIVITY, THEY CAN GENERATE MEANINGFUL INFORMATION CONCERNING THE OTHER TWO AREAS.
