This publication presents a series of articles summarizing the results of the 2002 through 2004 research activities of the Institute for Criminology and Social Prevention (ICSP) in the Czech Republic.
Abstract
The ICSP was founded in 1960 with an interdisciplinary focus chiefly aimed at researching the phenomena and causes of crime and related socio-pathological factors. The research focus of the 2002 through 2004 period has generally been on the effective enforcement of the law and on trends in crime and social pathology in the Czech Republic. In particular, research summarized in this volume includes an analysis of organized crime in the Czech Republic and of the characteristics of economic and financial crimes in the Czech Republic. Other research findings focus on the relationship between the majority and the minority ethnic group, Roma, in the Czech Republic as well as on sanction policy in the Czech Republic in terms of the imposition of long-term prison sentences. The drug trade in the Czech Republic, as well as the drug situation in prisons, is discussed as are the characteristics of foreign inmates imprisoned in the Czech Republic and the problems associated with incarcerating them. One article examined the problem of inter-ethnic conflict in the Czech Republic while another article explored the characteristics of violent offenders suspected of acting at the bequest of organized crime groups. The characteristics of juvenile delinquency in the Czech Republic at the turn of the millennium are described before the volume concludes with an examination of trafficking in women from the perspective of the Czech Republic.
