A MANAGERIAL HANDBOOK DESIGNED TO ASSIST CORRECTIONAL ADMINISTRATORS IN PLANNING, ORGANIZING, UNDERSTANDING CLIENTS, AND USING VOLUNTEERS IS PRESENTED.
Abstract
THE HANDBOOK CONTAINS SELECTED SPEECHES AND PRESENTATIONS FROM THE SOUTHEASTERN CORRECTIONAL MANAGEMENT TRAINING COUNCIL SEMINARS AND OTHER WORKSHOP AND SEMINAR PROGRAMS. THE FIRST TWO PRESENTATIONS DEAL WITH CORRECTIONAL PLANNING, FOCUSING FIRST ON THE PERSONAL ROLE OF THE PLANNER AND THEN ON THE TECHNOLOGICAL, LEGAL, AND SOCIAL ENVIRONMENT IN WHICH PLANNING TAKES PLACE. OTHER PRESENTATIONS EXPLAIN ORGANIZATIONAL PHENOMENA AND RELATE THEM TO PROBLEMS CONFRONTING THE CORRECTIONAL MANAGER. EMPHASIS IS PLACED ON STRENGTHENING MANAGERIAL SKILLS THROUGH UNDERSTANDING THE PEOPLE WHO ARE BEING MANAGED, I.E., THE INMATES. SOME OF THE PROBLEMS IMPOSED BY SOCIETY ON PEOPLE WHO EVENTUALLY BECOME OFFENDERS ARE DISCUSSED, WITH PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO IMPLICATIONS REGARDING THE KINDS OF BEHAVIOR THAT SHOULD BE AVOIDED BY CORRECTIONAL MANAGERS. THE FINAL PRESENTATION ILLUSTRATES HOW VOLUNTEERS HAVE BEEN INCORPORATED EFFECTIVELY INTO HUMAN SERVICE ORGANIZATIONS AND OFFERS GUIDELINES FOR USING VOLUNTEERS IN CORRECTIONAL PROGRAMS. FOR SEPARATE ABSTRACTS OF THREE OF THE PRESENTATIONS, SEE NCJ-32091, 32092, AND 44446.
