Responses of 238 Ohio parole officers to a survey on issues in adult probation are presented.
Abstract
Sociodemographic data on the respondents are provided: 76 percent were males; 24 percent, females. Ages ranged from 22 to 67, and salaries from a low of between $5,000 to $9,999 to a high of more than $40,000. Educational levels are also noted: 62.3 percent had college degrees when hired, and 13.4 percent had master's degrees. Data on presentence investigation (PSI) are included; over 70 percent of those surveyed said they spend more than 4 hours preparing a single presentence report. Further, most said that the judge should not allow the defendant to read the PSI. Twenty tables are included. (Author summary modified)
