In 1987, the city of Indianapolis, Indiana hosted the Tenth Pan American Games.
Abstract
To avoid financial debts the city undertook a coproduction effort that required the enlistment of over 35,000 volunteers. The following article reports the findings of an 11-month research effort on one aspect of this volunteer program, the management of the security assistance program, which was staffed by university and college student interns and nonintern volunteers. The purpose of this research project was to extend our knowledge of the management of a coproduction effort of this type and to make a preliminary assessment of the suitability of student security volunteers in international sporting events. The findings suggest that such coproduction enterprises are a viable method to save tax dollars and that a quality service can be provided. However, it was also discovered that careful attention to management style and techniques is essential to the success of such a program. 40 references. (Author abstract)
