THE PLACE OF A PRIVATE CURRICULUM IN HIGHER EDUCATION, THE DEVELOPMENT OF SUCH A CURRICULUM, AND THE CONTENT OF THE COURSES ARE DISCUSSED.
Abstract
IF A SECURITY CURRICULUM IS TO BE ACCEPTED BY UNIVERSITY AND COLLEGE ADMINISTRATORS, IT MUST DEMONSTRATE THAT IT CAN FULFILL THE GOALS OF HIGHER EDUCATION: THE PERFORMANCE OF RESEARCH AND THE IMPARTATION OF A SPECIALIZED BODY OF KNOWLEDGE WHICH ARE RELEVANT TO SIGNIFICANT COMMUNITY NEEDS. A REVIEW OF RESEARCH AND LITERATURE DEVOTED TO ISSUES UNIQUE TO THE SECURITY FIELD REVEALS THE PAUCITY OF A SPECIALIZED BODY OF RESEARCH AND KNOWLEDGE IN THE SECURITY FIELD, SO THAT MUCH WORK MUST BE DONE BEFORE HIGHER EDUCATION ADMINISTRATORS ARE TO BE CONVINCED OF THE NEED FOR A SEPARATE CURRICULUM FOR STUDENTS INTERESTED IN A CAREER IN PRIVATE SECURITY. ALTHOUGH THE TASK FORCE ON PRIVATE SECURITY STANDARDS AND GOALS ARGUES FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT OF PRIVATE SECURITY DEGREE PROGRAMS, THERE IS NO INDICATION THAT PREPARATION FOR SECURITY CAREERS CANNOT BE ACCOMPLISHED WITH A SPECIAL MIX OF MULTIDISCIPLINARY COURSES UNDER THE UMBRELLA OF A CRIMINAL JUSTICE DEGREE. THE CONTENT OF SUCH A CURRICULUM SHOULD INCLUDE THE HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE PRIVATE SECURITY ENTERPRISE; THE EXTENT, NATURE, AND CAUSES OF CRIME; COMPARATIVE PRIVATE SECURITY SYSTEMS; THE ROLE OF PRIVATE SECURITY PERSONNEL IN RELATION TO PUBLIC LAW ENFORCEMENT; THE ISSUE OF SECRECY IN A NATIONAL SECURITY POLICY; VICTIM PRECIPITAION OF CRIME; AND THE CONTRIBUTIONS AND PROBLEMS POSED BY NEIGHBORHOOD CRIME PREVENTION GROUPS.
