THE BANK CARD FIELD HAS BECOME RESPONSIBLE FOR AN ESTIMATED ONE-HALF OF ALL RETAIL AND CREDIT TRANSACTIONS IN THE COUNTRY AND SERIOUS CONSIDERATION SHOULD BE GIVEN TO SECURITY REQUIREMENTS.
Abstract
BANK RECORDS OF PROSPECTIVE CARDHOLDERS SHOULD BE EVALUATED WITH THE HELP OF LOCAL CREDIT BUREAU RECORDS AND KNOWLEDGEABLE CREDIT PERSONNEL TO CREATE A CARDHOLDER BASE. ADDITIONALLY, REJECTED APPLICATIONS SHOULD BE RECORDED AND INDEXED FOR FUTURE EVALUATION. BANK PERSONNEL SHOULD VISIT MERCHANTS BEFORE APPROVING ACCOUNTS AND SECURITY PERSONNEL SHOULD CONDUCT SEMINARS FOR MERCHANTS IN SPECIFIC SHOPPING AREAS OR ZONES. PLASTIC CARD MANUFACTURERS SHOULD ADHERE TO STRICT MANUFACTURING, PROCESSING, AND SHIPPING SPECIFICATIONS AND AUDIT TRAILS SHOULD BE ESTABLISHED TO IDENTIFY ANY MISSING PLASTICS. BANK DEPARTMENTS THAT HANDLE RETURNED CARDS AND OPERATE ACCOUNTS SHOULD BE LOCATED IN A LIMITED ACCESS AREA. POSTAL AUTHORITIES CAN BE CONTACTED TO ASSIST WITH CARD DELIVERY AND IDENTIFY MAIL THEFT AREAS. SYSTEMS FOR REPORTING LOST OR STOLEN CARDS SHOULD BE DEVELOPED, CARDHOLDERS SHOULD BE ENCOURAGED TO REPORT THEIR LOSSES PROMPTLY, AND SHOULD BE MADE AWARE OF THE DANGER OF MISPLACING THEIR CARDS. COMPUTERS CAN BE PROGRAMMED TO DETECT PERSONS WHO ARE USING ACCOUNTS FRAUDULENTLY. MERCHANTS CAN ALSO SUPPLY INFORMATION ABOUT SALES TRANSACTIONS TO SECURITY INVESTIGATORS. BANK CARD INFORMATION DEPARTMENTS SHOULD USE STRICT CONTROLS SUCH AS A SIGN-IN CODES, PRINTOUT SHREDDERS, FILE LIBRARY RECORDS, AND PERIODIC REVIEW OF SECURITY DOCUMENTS. COURSES IN BANK CARD SECURITY ARE OFFERED BY THE AMERICAN BANKERS ASSOCIATION, THE BANK ADMINISTRATION INSTITUTE, AND VARIOUS COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES. MEMBERSHIP IN THE INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF CREDIT CARD INVESTIGATORS HAS GREATLY ENHANCED THE SUCCESS OF BANK CARD SECURITY PROFESSIONALS. PHOTOGRAPHS ARE INCLUDED. (AOP)
