This book discusses the provision of security for the persons and collections in academic, public, and school libraries, as well as for their buildings.
Abstract
The introductory article recommends that every library establish a security plan, provide written procedures for implementing it, and conduct security training for employees. An article suggests library security procedures pertaining to persons, collections, and buildings, followed by another article that discusses whether to rely on inhouse security protection or seek outside assistance. An article identifies typical library security problems and notes the civil liability that may be incurred if a library fails to provide adequate protection for patrons, employees, and their belongings. A 191-item selected bibliography is categorized as follows: archives and special collections, computers, detection systems, disasters, fire, insurance, law, security, and theft and mutilation. The book also contains a security-survey checklist, a table of contents for a security procedures manual, and an outline of an inservice security training program.
