At the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, a complex, multilayered security program protects the United States space program.
Abstract
The security program is designed to protect the billions of dollars' worth of hardware and facilities as well as to prevent any disruptions to the centers operations. The security efforts include perimeter protection and access control, security forces, resource protection and planning, and support operations. Most of the plant protection officers are former civilian or military law enforcement officers who have completed 120 hours of training for new hires, 40 hours of annual inservice training, and comprehensive firearms training with yearly qualification. They must also pass a physical performance test annually. The security program also involves extra measures to prevent protests or other disruptions to launches while allowing the public some access to the area. Photographs
