Abstract
A discussion of the nature of security presents eight perspectives on the definition of security, explains the similarities and differences between public and private protective services, outlines generic security functions, and discusses the role of security in society and the basic areas in which security programs operate. Further sections explain crime rates and patterns in business, industry, and government and the risk management process and program components. Analyses of security systems and applications explain physical security, information security, personnel security, governmental security, business security, and institutional security. Operational issues are also discussed including the legal basis for protective services, organizational and societal constraints, and operational problems. Figures and index
