This study attempted to determine attitudes held toward the police by senior high school students in a municipality in British Columbia, Canada, and found that systematic efforts to create more positive attitudes toward the police were effective.
Abstract
A pretest-posttest, quasi-experimental design was used. During the experimental treatments, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police tried to create more positive attitudes. These treatments consisted of weekly police lectures and discussion during an entire semester for grade 10 or the incorporation of lectures, discussion, a ride-along-program, and an incarceration program, in a semestered law class for grades 11 and 12. Results indicated that the experimental groups were more positive in attitudes toward the police than the control groups. Tables and seven references are included. (Author abstract modified)
