The evolution of the search for justice throughout American History in four major areas--the right to vote, the rights of freedom of expression and freedom of the press, the rights of persons accused of crimes, and the right to equal protection of the laws--is examined in this pamphlet for junior and senior high school students.
Abstract
The Declaration of Independence and the Constitution launched the United States on a search for justice that has been pursued to the present day. The past 2 centuries are filled with the stories of those who have been forced to fight long and hard to gain justice for themselves within our system. The American system of justice has made enormous strides over the years: more citizens now have the right to vote, those accused of crimes are assured of greater constitutional protection, and fewer feel the sting of discrimination. However, the search for justice is far from over because many extremely difficult and complex issues still face the Nation. Photographs and discussion questions are provided.
