The Scottish Prison Service was established in April 1993 as an executive agency of the Scottish Office. The Service's objectives are to operate a safe and secure prison environment, be responsive to the needs of those it serves, deliver quality of service and value for money, present inmates with a range of opportunities for work and education, and fulfill the Citizen's Charter in all aspects of its operation.
Abstract
The Scottish Prison Service is headed by a Chief Executive, who is supported by a Prisons Board and 4,600 staff members employed in Scotland's 21 prison facilities. The Secretary of State for Scotland is accountable to Parliament for the operations of the Scottish Prison Service. The Service is funded from the Law, Order, Miscellaneous Health and Social Work Services Vote. The Service's strategic management approach will be implemented through a corporate plan, which will annually set out the Service's primary objectives, trends and factors affecting Service operations, staffing requirements, capital investment programs, forecasts of income, financial and performance targets, efficiency gains, human resource strategy, and information systems strategy. This framework document also outlines the Service's human resources and support services. 4 appendixes
