A TOTAL OF 174 SCHOOL DISTRICTS REPORTED THEIR SECURITY COSTS. TYPES OF PREVENTIVE MEASURES USED INCLUDED GUARDS, FENCING, INTRUSION DETECTORS, INTRUSION ALARMS, SPECIAL LIGHTING, SECURITY CONTRACTS WITH AGENCIES, TWOWAY RADIOS, AND VANDAL-RESISTANT WINDOWS. IN MOST CASES, SUBURBAN DISTRICTS SPENT THE MOST PER DISTRICT, FOLLOWED BY URBAN DISTRICTS. THE HIGHEST AVERAGE COST PER DISTRICT WAS FOR GUARDS. OVERALL, SPECIAL LIGHTING WAS REPORTED MORE OFTEN THAN OTHER PREVENTIVE MEASURES. PLASTIC GLAZING WAS THE MOST POPULAR METHOD OF MAKING WINDOWS VANDAL-RESISTENT. INCLUDED IN THIS REPORT ARE A NUMBER OF CASE HISTORIES OF SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES THAT HAVE USED PREVENTIVE MEASURES TO SOLVE VANDALISM AND SECURITY PROBLEMS.
