Organized in 1986 by police concerned about juvenile crime in Bristol, the Schools and Police Liaison for Summer Holidays (SPLASH) project provides a wide range of social and recreational facilities for young people during the summer months to divert youth from offending and to improve police relationships with young people and local communities.
Abstract
This profile of the project describes program activities, discusses management and staffing issues as well as program costs and funding, and identifies program achievements and problems. Open to all 10- to 15-year-olds, SPLASH offers up to 20 different activities for girls and boys daily. By 1989 more than 4,000 young people had participated in 440 organized activities. Last year nearly 60 police officers assisted and 100 parents volunteered their services. Four other police forces have demonstrated the adaptability of SPLASH by creating similar programs. 2 tables
