MATERIAL FOR TEACHER TRAINEES CONCERNING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SCHOOL EXPERIENCES AND DELINQUENCY, AND WAYS IN WHICH DELINQUENT BOYS PERCEIVE SCHOOL.
Abstract
REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE ON SCHOOL INFLUENCE ON STUDENT BEHAVIOR AND TAPE-EXCERPTS FROM TEACHER-PUPIL CONVERSATIONS WITH A SERIES OF QUESTIONS RELATING TO IT. THESE QUESTIONS SERVE AS A FOCI FOR DISCUSSION. THE AUTHOR STATES THAT NEW MECHANISMS ARE NEEDED IN THE SCHOOL BY WHICH THE POTENTIAL DEVIANT CAN BE MORE SUCCESSFULLY INVOLVED IN SCHOOL ACTIVITIES. THESE MECHANISMS INCLUDE BOTH CURRICULUM MODIFICATION AND INTERACTIVE MECHANISMS WHICH TAKE INTO ACCOUNT (1) THE STYLE OF LIFE OF SUBORDINATE ETHNIC AND CLASS GROUPS, AND (2) THE IMPORTANCE OF PEERS TO THE ADOLESCENT. SCHOOL ACTIVITIES WHICH TEND TO FORCE A CHOICE BETWEEN CONFORMITY TO THE SCHOOL AND CONFORMITY TO PREVIOUS LIFE STYLES AND PEER EXPECTATIONS ARE NOT SOLUTIONS TO THE PROBLEM. (AUTHOR MODIFIED)
