This manual provides suggestions on how successful schools and school administrators deal with discipline problems.
Abstract
The first chapter emphasizes the need for clear and easily understood school rules. Consequences for misbehavior in school can include verbal reprimands, counseling, parent involvement, reports, student contracts, apologies, loss of privileges, demerits, detention, school service, suspension, court referral, and expulsion. Some approaches toward conflict management include traditional ways to deal with fighting on campus, and the use of peer mediators or community resource groups to resolve disputes. The manual discusses the need for procedural justice and equal opportunity to ensure discipline in schools. The final two chapters deal with the need for violence-free and drug-free schools, and recommend some ways to eliminate weapons from campus, reduce gang activity, ensure campus security, and prevent alcohol and other drug use by students. 4 appendixes
