This packet contains information and materials designed to assist communities in their observance of Crime Prevention Month, October 1996, which has the theme of "Safer Communities, Brighter Futures."
Abstract
The theme reflects the Crime Prevention Coalition's belief that grassroots action is needed to prevent crime. Packet information includes an outline of statistics that "reveal the realities of crime." It provides statistical information on crime in general, crime victims, family violence, juvenile violence, and drug use. This is followed by a section that profiles various partnerships that have been effective in reducing crime. A sample proclamation for Crime Prevention Month 1996 is then provided, along with the procedure for issuing the proclamation. The proclamation should symbolize a commitment to crime prevention by State and local government and present an opportunity for a media event. A sample press release for the proclamation is provided as well. Examples of ways in which youth have become involved in community crime prevention efforts are provided, along with a discussion of high-tech ways crime prevention efforts have been served. A checklist for planning a crime prevention event is followed by suggested events. A calendar of special observances encompasses not only the Crime Prevention Month of October, but every month through August. McGruff and Scruff products and how they can be ordered are listed, along with selected resources available from the National Crime Prevention Council. Also provided are camera-ready crime, drug, and violence prevention materials to help promote crime prevention in October and throughout the year.
