The Australian Institute of Criminology reports to the Council of Australian Governments on progress that has been made in implementing the National Plan to Reduce Violence Against Women and Their Children 2010-2022.
Abstract
The ultimate goal of the National Plan is to achieve a significant and sustained reduction in the levels of violence against women and their children. Specifically, this report discusses progress made toward the National Outcomes under the First Action Plan and the National Priorities under the National Implementation Plan of the First Action Plan. The report highlights activities that lay the foundation for a sustained reduction in violence against women and their children. A tripartite National Plan Implementation Panel was established in April 2012 in order to coordinate the work of Australian governments and the non-government sector in reducing violence against women and their children. Public awareness and education campaigns have been launched, with a focus on Indigenous communities. Grant programs are operating in support of community organizations committed to reducing violence against women. A hotline has been developed for those wishing to report and/or seek advice in cases of sexual assault and/or domestic and family violence. Collaborative, integrated support services are being offered to women who have experienced violence. Efforts include providing protection for women victims of domestic violence when their abusers are required to leave the home. There are also efforts to expand behavior modification programs for perpetrators of violence against women. There is ongoing work to build the evidence base for the prevalence of violence against women, along with data on community attitudes toward violence against women. To facilitate this effort, funding has been provided for 4 yearly cycles of the Personal Safety Survey and the National Community Attitudes Survey. 6 references
