The National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges has developed a Model Code on Domestic and Family Violence to address the need for a comprehensive and coordinated response to domestic assault.
Abstract
The Model Code's advisory committee included judges, attorneys, advocates for battered women and children, legislators, police chiefs, physicians, concerned citizens, and formerly battered women. The Model Code is a 49-page document containing five chapters: General Provisions, Criminal Penalties and Procedures, Civil Orders for Protection, Family and Children, and Prevention and Treatment. The code considers domestic assault to be a crime that requires active and thorough intervention. It offers procedures for comprehensive protection orders for an expanded definition of victims and their family or household members. It provides that the safety and well-being of children are paramount when custody is an issue. It also sets forth ways for States and communities to coordinate efforts to identify, intervene, and prevent family violence. Photographs
