EXAMINATION OF THE HISTORICAL AND CURRENT USE OF POLICEWOMEN, THEIR IDEAS AND ATTITUDES, AND THEIR IMAGE.
Abstract
THIS THESIS PRESENTS A HISTORICAL OVERVIEW OF POLICEWOMEN IN AMERICA AND FOREIGN COUNTRIES, AND DISCUSSES OBSTACLES CONFRONTING WOMEN IN LAW ENFORCEMENT. AREAS OF EMPLOYMENT, AND THE POLICEWOMAN AND SUPERVISION ARE STUDIED. IN ORDER TO DELVE INTO THE ATTITUDES AND IDEAS OF AMERICAN POLICEWOMEN, TWENTY FEMALE MEMBERS OF THE POLICE FORCE WERE INTERVIEWED BY THE RESEARCHER. THE RESULTS INDICATE ONLY ONE MAJOR AREA OF DISPUTE IN THE OVERALL VIEW OF THE RESPONDENTS, AND THAT IS WHETHER WOMEN SHOULD WORK IN GENERAL PATROL SITUATIONS IN THE FIELD. ALL RESPONDENTS INDICATED THAT WOMEN SHOULD BE GETTING EQUAL PAY WITH THE MEN WHO DO COMPARABLE WORK. THE INTERVIEWEE QUESTIONNAIRE IS CONTAINED IN THE APPENDIX. (AUTHOR MODIFIED)
