Information about victim advocacy on college campuses is provided by describing the program established at the University of Central Florida.
Abstract
Despite the best efforts of campus law enforcement agencies, some students do become the victims of crime. At the University of Central Florida (UCF), the Victim Advocate Program was initiated in 1989 to provide information, advocacy and support to victims of campus crime. The program is intended to ensure that victims receive the benefits of university and community services to help them recover physically and emotionally. Victims are encouraged to file police reports, but this is not a prerequisite for information or referral services. The UCF advocacy program was developed under the direction and guidance of the University Crime Prevention Unit but members of the campus community also have direct access to the advocate's office. The staffing and training of officers involved in the program are described. A sample of a Victim Statistical Information report sheet is included with this article.
