STUDY CONCERNED WITH THE SEGMENT OF ROLE THEORY RELATIVE TO THE EFFECTS OF ROLE STRAIN ON PERFORMANCE AS SEEN IN THE POLICE ROLE MANIFESTED IN ISSUING CITATIONS AND MAKING ARRESTS.
Abstract
THE STUDY WAS UNDERTAKEN TO DETERMINE THE EXTENT THAT INTRA-ROLE CONFLICT AND ROLE STRAIN ARE POSITIVELY RELATED AND TO DISCOVER THE EXTENT THAT ROLE STRAIN AND ROLE PERFORMANCE ARE NEGATIVELY RELATED. DATA FOR TESTING THE HYPOTHESES IN THIS STUDY WERE OBTAINED FROM POLICEMEN EMPLOYED FULL TIME BY A CITY WITH A POPULATION OF ABOUT 175,000 IN A SOUTH-CENTRAL STATE. DATA WERE COLLECTED BY INTERVIEWS GUIDED BY AN INTERVIEW SCHEDULE AND BY A SYSTEMATIC SEARCH OF RECORDS MAINTAINED BY THE CITY'S POLICE DEPARTMENT. THE FINDINGS SUPPORTED THE HYPOTHESES THAT INTRA-ROLE CONFLICT ARE POSITIVELY RELATED AND THAT ROLE STRAIN IS NEGATIVELY RELATED TO JOB EFFECTIVENESS. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
