SIX SITUATIONS ARE DESCRIBED IN WHICH THE POLICE TRAINEE MUST EXERCISE HIS DECISION MAKING POWERS VERY QUICKLY - THE WRONG CHOICE RESULTS IN EITHER THE OFFICER OR AN INNOCENT PERSON BEING SHOT WITH A BLANK.
Abstract
STAGING THE SITUATIONS FOR CLASSES OF 30-40 OFFICERS TAKES ONLY ABOUT 3 HOURS. AS SOON AS A STUDENT COMPLETES ONE SCENE, HE MOVES ON TO THE NEXT. THE ROLE PLAYING SITUATIONS ARE MARITAL FIGHTS (TURNING HIS BACK TO EITHER PARTY WILL GET THE OFFICER SHOT), DERELICT IN AN EMPTY SHACK (THE DERELICT MAY BE A JUNKIE OR A CONSTRUCTION FOREMAN), DRUGGIST IN DRUG STORE AT NIGHT (REALLY A DRUGGIST OR MAYBE A THIEF?), WAREHOUSE BURGLARY, LADY IN DISTRESS, AND PROWLER IN A RAILROAD YARD. TRAINEES ARE RATED ON THE PROPER USE OF FIREARMS....PO 50 PERCENT, LARGELY BECAUSE THEY WOULD BE REQUIRED TO PROVIDE SERVICES DIFFERENT FROM LARGE INSTITUTIONS. ON THE OTHER HAND, IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT MOST OF THE TASK FORCE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR INSTITUTIONAL DISCIPLINARY PROCEDURES ARE EITHER IN EFFECT IN MOST LARGE INSTITUTIONS OR ARE INEXPENSIVE TO IMPLEMENT, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF PROVIDING COUNSEL TO INMATES.
