This article describes the Negotiator, a robot designed by Robotic FX to support a variety of first response responsibilities.
Abstract
The Negotiator is described by its developer as simple to use, reliable, cost effective, and capable. The Negotiator was designed with a simple plug-and-load architecture that could be adapted for many tactical uses, such as police functions, fire functions, hazmat evaluation, bomb/arson assessment, and military functions. The plug-and-load architecture reduces the overall cost of the Negotiator by allowing the purchase and integration of accessories on an as-needed basis, or as resources allow. This type of architecture can connect to virtually any device, such as sensors, detectors, and external devices. Data from the plug-and-load architecture is then transmitted to the operator control unit (OCU), which is an 8-pound, handheld device suitable as a wearable heads-up-display. A two-way digital audio component provides for talk-and-listen communication from the robot’s surrounding area to the operator of the OCU. The information communicated from the Negotiator back to the operator allows for critical decisions to be made regarding response scenarios given the circumstances of the event. The Negotiator thus reduces the risk to personnel by carrying the sensors usually carried by first response personnel and then delivering that information back to personnel who are operating from a safe distance. The upgradeability of the Negotiator is highlighted along with its accessibility due to its low price tag and ease of use. Exhibits
