The At-Risk Youth in Crisis Handbook Series is designed to promote interagency agreement on procedures for schools to follow in managing crisis situations with at-risk students; this volume explains the handbook's rationale and development to guide school districts in adapting the handbook to meet their own needs.
Abstract
The volume introduces the concept of interagency cooperation as an essential element of dealing with at-risk youth and includes a directory of community resources available in Oregon. The rationale for the handbook is explained in terms of communication and effective response to crisis. Benefits of the handbook are identified, including clear definition of responsibilities, workable guidelines, interaction between schools and service agencies, and sense of community. Difficulties associated with the handbook's development are noted, and guidelines are offered on how to adapt the handbook to meet specific community needs. The critical role of schools in preventing and intervening in crisis situations is discussed. Examples of collaboration between schools and social services are provided. 13 references
